Group Music Sessions for adults

Bentham Band 15-1-04.jpg (19522 bytes)

These are an hour in length and sometimes followed by refreshments. Groups are set up to have a consistent membership so that participants can get to know and feel comfortable with each other. The groups happen at the same time every week for an 8-week series that is repeated three times a year.

Individual Music Sessions for adults

Half an hour to an hour in length, these music sessions also happen in 8-week series. Participants (clients and their assistants when appropriate) develop their creative skills enabling all to express themselves and communicate through music.

Instrumental tuition

This is available during group and individual sessions. We encourage and assist students to cultivate practice, rehearsal and research skills. If we are not able to offer the specific skills required we could help find a teacher (you might want to learn the Northumbrian pipes?). Musicians with and without disabilities are encouraged to use Music Alive's resources and communities to develop their musicianship, and technical competence. Instruments played by session leaders, volunteers and participants are wide ranging from drums and guitars to violas and metallaphones; soundbeams and saxophones.

Sound Futures – children and young people aged 5 - 18

This project takes place in school holidays and offers children and young people the opportunity to create music of their own choosing in small groups that include friends and young peer-musicians. Specially tailored sessions enable an individual's needs be catered for. A blink can be all that is needed for somebody to create and perform their own music.

Children with a disability could join a drum circle, a choir, a guitar group and record or rehearse with your band.

Beatz 'r' Us – young people aged 14+

This group meets regularly at Bentham House. Participants develop specific skills in composition and performance using acoustic instruments and music technology.

Music Skills course

A collaboration with Swindon College where adults with disabilities work in a small group with two tutors and a volunteer to improve their communication, literacy and numeracy skills whilst studying music. The course is closed to new applicants at the present time, but we hope to run a new course in September 2008.

Monday Evening Session Society

Music Alive organises jam sessions every Monday evening from 8pm that include musicians of all abilities. Sessions are enjoyed by both audiences and performers. Further information is available at http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/musicalivejam/

Special Projects

These are usually undertaken in collaboration with other organisations (schools, colleges, day centres etc.) that work with people with disabilities and aim to make the enviable resources that Music Alive has available to a wider group of people.

Charging policy

We make a small charge of between £2 and £12 to people who wish to attend music sessions in our music rooms. This money contributes towards the costs involved in providing this service. If you genuinely cannot afford the charge, bursaries are available. Please discuss costs when booking a session.

Drum Circle

Have fun sharing rhythms, for drummers of all abilities and from the age of 9 and upward.
Held at Commonweal School between 5 and 6pm on Wednesday evenings. See Noticeboard for travel directions.
